When you search for jobs it can be difficult to spend time and money flipping through the Sunday newspaper. There are times that that time and money comes up with nothing but coupons, and store ads. So what you can do is try job searching online. Here are some tips that you can follow.
Your Resume Online
Check job search websites and add your resume to them. You want to make sure that when you add your resume to their database that it is data only and not part of a template because when you copy and paste that can cause very odd spacing and will make it difficult for your potential employers to read.
Make sure to proofread your resume, TWICE. You do not want to have any errors on your resume, especially if they are submitted online. It may be best for you to print out your resume and go over it that way. It is amazing how many errors you can catch differently from a print version of something versus a electronic version of something.
Make Sure You are Squeaky Clean
Your next step for your online job search is to search for yourself online. You want to make sure that there isn’t anything online that you wouldn’t want your employer finding out about you. It’s amazing the things that will show up about you when you Google. You can find your Twitter account, your Facebook account, and your Myspace among other things. Depending on what you may or may not have said on these sites could have a bearing on what others think about you.
Set up a Job Alert
Be sure to set up email job alerts. This will keep you from being tied down to your computer day in and day out searching for jobs. When a certain job matches your criteria you can then have it emailed directly to you. Most sites will give you the opportunity to choose how frequently you would like the updates to come to your inbox. At first, have them come daily, if you find you are getting a lot of repeats, then back the number of times down to suit your needs.
Who Do You Know?
Use online networking. Tell everyone you know that lives in the area you are looking for work. You never know who might know someone who is searching for a good employee. So make sure that you contact the people on your buddy list, your email list, Facebook, and even your MySpace. I wouldn’t put it out in a public listing that you are searching for a job, but a private message would be a good idea to send this message out to your social networking collective.
College Alumni Association
Google for the college that you graduated, most colleges will provide alumni with lifetime assistance in finding a job. Even if you are not local they may be able to assist you. If you are local it may be much easier for them to have a networking relationship with companies, but it is worth the effort to contact them during your job search to see what help they can be to you.
